NO SUCH THING AS A 'JUNIOR Holy Spirit,'
Angel and Katelynn Baez on Power Kids Ministry

By Glori Rubio

While many find it acceptable to begin serving God in their youth, the truth is that our children learn to know and love Him many years before that. God’s plan is to raise up children who will be ministers of the Gospel, walking in power and demonstration of the Holy Spirit while still young. Kids can be the men and women of God they have been called to be, now.

We recently connected with Angel and Katelynn Baez, who lead Power Kids, the Crossing’s ministry for children ages 6 to 11 years old. “The heart beat behind Power Kids is to teach and equip kids for the kind of life that God has called them to. We want them to know who they are in God and the power they have in Him – the same power that adults do!” Katelynn shared.

It’s important that our kids understand that they are not called to live a kid-sized life in Christ, she said, “we don’t talk to the kids like they have a junior Holy Spirit. The same Spirit inside of an adult is the same Spirit inside of a child.” This is not just a motto, either. Katelynn says if any adult was to listen to a Power Kids lesson, “they’ll get rocked by God too.”

Katelynn and Angel believe it’s important to allow the kids to see and practice this in action. “Some of the most powerful times we have is when the kids practice hearing from the Lord,” Angel shared. “Sometimes, we will invite somebody in from the congregation and invite the kids to listen and speak what they feel the Lord is saying to them.”

“It shows them they do hear from God! We have seen God really speak and kids experience this in our ministry times together,” Katelynn added.

Beyond weekly lessons and ministry time, Power Kids is also designed to be a place for fun and friendship. “We’re big on the kids having fun while they’re here. We want them to feel like this is their place to grow and learn and have fun, all at the same time,” Katelynn said.

The kids love hanging out together and they enjoy their time with their Power Kids teachers too.  “The relationship we get to have with the kids is awesome,” Katelynn said, “that’s my favorite part.” Whether in class, at church, or at weekly Life Groups, the kids feel a sense of familiarity, “knowing we are all a part of the same crew, the same family,” she said.

So, how can we as the Church support our Power Kids? If you have a heart for seeing young ones come to know Christ in a very real way, reach out to Angel Baez. “Otherwise,” Angel said, “just be praying for our kids, that they continue to engage – not just in class, but with God.”
