Building Faith in the Next Generation:
Jacob Lewis on Emerging Youth (EY)
While youth are the “next generation,” their coming of age is not a thing of the future. It is happening now. God is equipping leaders and opening doors for them to change their communities and impact our world in big ways. We see this and as a church, we know it is essential to provide space for youth to build their foundations, grow their faith, and step out in the purpose God has called them to now.
We recently connected with Jacob Lewis, a second-year YouthStorm intern who has had the opportunity to serve the Crossing’s youth ministry, Emerging Youth, referred to as “EY.”
“EY is our youth group for ages 12-18. We meet every Monday night from 6:30-8:30pm–usually longer,” Jacob said. “We are focused on building youth up in the faith. You don’t have to wait until a certain age to experience God. He does move in us and he is moving.”
What can you expect if you attend EY for the first time? You’ll build friendships, grow in your walk with Christ, and have a blast while running hard after God. “For the first hour or so, we like to play games together and get all the energy out. All that stuff. Then, we spend time hearing a message and talking about Sunday’s message,” Jacob shared.
Youth can be who they are, Jacob said. They don’t need to come in thinking, “Oh, I’m going to a youth group with these boring people and we’re going to talk about how horrible I am. Right?”
No, he explained, “we incorporate a sort of ‘rawness’ into what youth group is. We’re very real with each other. We want to emphasize that we’re a family and that everyone is accepted–and that through the Holy Spirit, you are made whole, new, and clean.”
Jacob’s story is unique and his participation in EY started long before he was serving. “I’ve been in EY since I was 16. Once I turned 18, I did the first year of YouthStorm’s internship. Then, I came back as a leader. You can see how much it has affected my faith and has helped me grow personally. The intimacy and vulnerability aspect is a huge part of how I’ve matured as a Christian,” he said.
Jacob is not the only one who has experienced this transformation and growth in his walk with God, with EY being a catalyst. Each year, EY hosts Basecamp, a three-day experience of worship, revival, learning, and fun.
“So many youth go to Basecamp and they get rocked,” Jacob said, “There are so many testimonies that I wouldn’t do justice if I tried to share. Talk to any of our youth and they can tell you–God moves.”
How can you get involved? If you have a heart to serve in the Crossing’s youth ministry, talk to Josiah Armstrong. If you are ages 12-18, join us on Mondays! Learn more about Emerging Youth here.
