PUMPKINFEST IS COMING!
By Sarah Truman
“Fall is my favorite season in New England, the changing of the leaves, warm days, cool nights and Pumpkinfest! This fun and free event is our “welcome to our home”, for the community. Like the change in season, Pumpkinfest may impact and change a life.” Marie Petty, our Pumpkinfest coordinator and a long time member of the crossing put it best as to why our 9th annual event, Pumpkinfest, should be the most exciting one yet for us as a church.
Not every outreach looks the same. From impacting people in the prison ministry Kairos, to Base Camp, to our staples like Pumpkinfest and Christmas at the Crossing, this is God’s design to reach everyone. Being involved is a must in order to expand and love the world the way we are taught to by God in His Word. In Luke 1:76-79, the children of Christ are given this encouragement: “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare His ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” Considering the prophesied season we are entering, be encouraged to be a part of these opportunities to represent Jesus to those around us.
“Pumpkinfest takes place during my favorite time of year and it’s a great practical way to walk out our faith by being a light to our local community.” Will Ellis, one of our worship leaders, illustrates the servants heart well.
Katelynn Baez, a Kid’s Church leader, speaks on the core of why we need this event to be such a high priority. “I think the heartbeat of why we do what we do at Pumpkinfest is to serve the local community, not just with a fun time, although that is the initial appeal. What it really is designed to be is an intentional and grand opportunity for the church, the bride, to do her job as she was made to do. Evangelizing the local community looks like reaching out to the broken parts of the community and bringing them into the family of God. It’s why we open our home (the church property itself) and we say come have fun with us and hangout; but it’s extremely important for us all to be present. We should all be serving because we have a divine opportunity to truly bridge the gap between God and man, for the people who don’t know who God is.”
I, Sarah Truman, remember in 2014, after I came to the Crossing, God said to me, “Let this day be a date for us, and let’s see how many people you can make smile. Really smile. Or belly laugh. Or cry. Whatever people may need from you, give to them.” I knew then, alongside other reasons, that Crossing Life was where I belonged. To be compelled by the Spirit to reach out to the broken in our backyard, and let them know that God loves them, was so impactful and beautiful for my own walk. Now I run quickly to sign up for different spaces to serve.
Members new and old at the Crossing Life are being challenged to have the heart attitude to serve. Without it, people will not see the real love of God on display. Terri Poirier shares that not every year is the same. “Last year I came to Pumpkinfest not really knowing what to expect, and I was amazed at the way everyone pulled together to make the community feel welcomed. I am looking forward to serving alongside everyone this year.”
Pumpkinfest has the potential to create moments of belonging to something bigger than ourselves. Strangers could find a home because they see we are home. Wanderers in the world need family; that could be us. Be encouraged; do not grow weary in this season! We never know who’s watching, or who will be impacted by our sincere love of God. Let’s make this the best year ever!
